Itinerary
Day 1
This morning we travel by air-conditioned four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle, traveling north along the Captain Cook Highway. Our journey takes us across the Daintree River by cable ferry, then along one of Australia’s most scenic coastal routes through the World Heritage Listed Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation. Your experienced and informative guide will add to your enjoyment with their extensive knowledge of the area. We follow the 4wd-only Bloomfield Track through some of the most rugged terrain in the country. After crossing rivers and climbing mountain ranges with spectacular views, we stop for lunch at the famous Lion’s Den Hotel, established in 1875 and one of Queensland’s oldest remaining bush pubs. We continue to the unique geological oddity, Black Mountain, surrounded in mystery and spoken of in ancient Aboriginal legend. In Cooktown, we visit Grassy Hill to marvel at the fabulous and panoramic views of the Endeavour River, Cooktown and Coral Sea. Have your camera ready! Overnight Cooktown.
Day 2
Today you are collected from your accommodation at 7.45 am by Guurrbi Tours for the half-day Rainbow Serpent Tour, with Nugal-warra Elder, Willie Gordon. Willie, the traditional story-teller of the Nugal-warra clan, takes you to the Nugal rock art sites, set in stunning countryside high in the hills above Hope Vale. You’ll visit six sites, including the Reconciliation Cave and an ancestral Birthing Site where Willie’s grandfather was born. Willie shares the stories behind the art – stories which can only be told by Elders of the Nugal clan - and explains how the paintings speak of the essence of life and the lores of his people. With his great smile and infectious laugh, Willie gives you an amazing insight into Aboriginal society and spirituality, and has you thinking about your own relationship with the land and how the lores of his people can apply to us all. The tour includes an estimated 30-minute bush walk. There is a short climb to two of the sites, but generally the terrain is easy. Water is provided, and cameras are welcome. Return to Cooktown approx. 1.15 pm, and the afternoon is free for you to explore historical Cooktown before being transferred to the airport for your 35 minute flight with Skytrans Airlines. Enjoy the spectacular views of the Daintree coastline between rainforest and reef, before being met on arrival and returned to your accommodation.
