The Course

If you are running short on time or prefer a land based learn to dive options then you can consider the shorter 4 day learn to dive course as a good option. The first two days are spent learning the theory and underwater skills of diving. At the end of day 2 you are invited to attend Reef Teach marine biology presentation. Days 3 and 4 are spent on a fast and modern day boat completing the 4 training dives toward open water certification.
The day boat is TUSA and they have up to 21 possible dive sites they can visit. The water barely drops below 22° Celsius and between December to February is up around 30° Celsius. Visibility is usually between 10 and 30 metres.
The dive training centre is located in the city of Cairns and features all the modern facilities need to learn to dive. This diver training center also boasts Cairn’s deepest dive pool. At a depth of 4.5 metres in the middle, dive students can get and excellent idea of what pressure feels like under water.
4 Day Learn to Dive Course Itinerary
Day 1: Pro Dive will collect you from Cairns city accommodation at around 8.00am. You will spend the day learning theory & various skills in their Pool and Classroom training facility. A doctor will visit the facility for anyone who needs to complete the dive medical (AS4005-1) and after lunch (not included) pool training commences. Your day should finish around 5.30pm when you will be dropped back to your Cairns city accommodation.
Day 2: Pro Dive will pick you up from your Cairns city accommodation at around 8.30am. Again, you will spend the day finishing the theory & various skills in the pool. Please note that on days 1 & 2 meals, accommodation and your dive medical are not included. At 5.45pm there is a complimentary Transfer service to the Boland Centre, 14 Spence Street for Reef Teach marine biology presentation(Optional). * Please note transfer not available after Reef Teach; you will need to make own way back to accommodation.
Day 3: Pro Dive will collect you from accommodation in Cairns at around 7.30am to board you on Tusa for your day trip to the Great Barrier Reef. Here you will complete 2 training dives with your dive instructor over two separate Great Barrier Reef locations. Lunch, morning and afternoon teas are included. Arrive back into Cairns at approximately 4.00pm and transfer back to your accommodation
Day 4: Once again you will be collected from your accommodation in Cairns and boarded on Tusa for your second day on the Great Barrier Reef. Complete two further training dives with your instruction at two different Outer Barrier Reef locations. On completion of these dives you are now officially a Certified Diver! Lunch, morning and afternoon teas are included in the day. Return back into Cairns at approximately 4.00pm and transfer back to accommodation.

$10.00 per person per day transfers from City and northern beaches accommodation
An additional fee of $20.00 per person per day is payable direct to TUSA Dive. (This fee consists of $5.00 Government Environmental Management Charge, Port Departure Tax, Fuel Levy and administration costs).
A Dive Medical in accordance with Australian Standard, A.S 4005-1 (1992). This will be arranged by us day 1 of the course. A fee of AU$49.50 is payable directly to the doctor.

Requirements
The ability to swim 200 metres
The minimum age is 12 years (subject to a medical assessment). Children under the age of 15 years must be accompanied by a parent or guardian
An Australian Standard AS4005-1 is required. Australian medical standards are different to those overseas. A medical obtained overseas will not be accepted in Australia. Some medical conditions may preclude you from diving. Asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, high or low blood pressure and pregnancy are the most common ones encountered.
Please note there are regulations about flying or going to altitude after diving.
Currently the rules state that for a single no decompression dive, you should not fly/go to altitude for at least 12 hours.
For multiple dives you should not fly/go to altitude for at least 24 hours.
We recommend waiting a minimum 24 hours whenever possible. These are guidelines only; there is no guarantee that these recommendations will prevent decompression sickness. Currently there are no guidelines regarding diving after flying.
Altitude is 300m/1000ft above sea level.
This includes going to the Atherton Tablelands, so be careful when you are booking tours to follow your dive course/trip.
